A big trend in home decor right now is chalkboards. From regular chalkboards, to ones on mason jars, storage containers and mini signs. Today I am going to show you how to get an extra large chalkboard perfect for your living room, kitchen or even home office, for only $25!
I purchased this frame from Ikea, and I chose the black frame, but there are other options if you prefer a different color frame. I just like how it blended in once it was painted.
Here is a picture of the frame when I first got it. It is horrible quality because I was so excited to get started. But this also shows you just how big it is. If you look closely you can see my dachshund in the reflection. He was very intrigued with it.
Ok, here we go! The chalkboard surface is going to be the wooden backer piece. Take it apart and give it a good cleaning.
I used this chalkboard paint by Plaid, that I found at a craft store, and a wide foam brush to apply the paint.
Make sure you use thin coats so you get a more even finish with no clumps. I used 3 thin coats.
Follow the instructions on drying, then after you let the paint dry seal the paint with chalk. This is a very important step!! Do not skip it!
Once you have sealed it and cleaned it off with a damp towel, put it back together and presto! You now have an extra large chalkboard for an extra small price!!
After you hang it, all thats left to do is decorate it!
Now head out to Ikea and make that Extra Large chalkboard that been on your wish list!! If you have any questions on how to make this, let me know and I will be happy to answer them for you!
Lovely!
